"And too little of what we have spent has contributed to genuine and lasting progress. Too much of the money has never reached its intended target, but stayed here in America to pay salaries or fund overhead in contracts."

She said I know what it's like to be dead
I know what it is to be sad
And she's making me feel like I've never been born.

I said "Who put all those things in your hair
Things that ake me feel that I'm mad
And you're making me feel like I've never been born."

She said "you don't understand what I said"
I said "No, no, no, you're wrong"
When I was a boy everything was right
Everything was right

I said "Even though you know what you know
I know that I'm ready to leave
'Cause you're making me feel like I've never been born."

She said "you don't understand what I said"
I said "No, no, no, you're wrong"
When I was a boy everything was right
Everything was right

I said "Even though you know what you know
I know that I'm ready to leave
'Cause you're making me feel like I've never been born."

I know what it is to be sad...

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: Boston

You definitely have a Boston accent, even if you think you don't. Of course, that doesn't mean you are from the Boston area, you may also be from New Hampshire or Maine.

clair,
you still haven't sent photographic proof of being in France. we miss you. well, i do anyway. did you get our drunk voice message from a week ago?

People think that I'm drunk when I'm happy. Are their lives so miserable that they're only happy when they're drunk? Or can't attribute happiness to a sober joy? I'm yet to understand this, "were you drunk tonight" business.
Also, it's only the first week of school and I'm already slacking. yikes!
» From the Economist's Chicago Citi Briefing for this week:
The princess and the dye-pack

Who says we lose pluck with age? On September 5th Melvena Cooke, a 79-year-old woman from Chicago’s south side, asked a teller at a local Bank of America branch to lean close because she had just come from the dentist and couldn’t speak loudly. When the teller complied, Ms Moore showed him a gun tucked into her bag and demanded $30,000 and “no red-dye”, referring to the exploding pigment packs used to deter thieves. The teller reached into a drawer, pulled a silent alarm and walked away. Ms Moore left the bank without the money and ducked into a nearby drug store. Wearing a long black coat and a white visor emblazoned with the word “PRINCESS”—perhaps not the best outfit for robbing a bank—she was quickly apprehended. The gun was plastic.

I ran three miles today.
» I haven't written in a very long while. So I wrote.
what would she be (if she found out)

There is a charm in her walm. There is
a joy for life-- eyes sparkling, like
drops of rain on a green leaf. Her hair falls
down on her shoulder, and then she moves
her head so that it it's on one side, and then
the other, like the monsoon breeze, blowing
first this way, and then that. There is a smile
on her face, as she talks her witty talks, in
that way she talks, with the enthusiasm of
spring.

She was pregnant, once. She loved the (almost)
father. She mostly loves him still. Mostly he
loves her too. But sometimes he loves
the other. The other she doesn't know about.

So, most of France was forced into a revolution it didn’t really want. Equality was essentially sent to hell as the reign of terror came about, even though it (equality) was what the revolution was supposed to be all about. However the Church was somewhat contained, since their property had been snatched away, and people somewhat reprogrammed as to digest socialism (the secular calendar (sadly) didn’t work out, but everyone except America uses the metric system). The revival of French economy could have been purely because of the growth of the world economy. Also, universal suffrage wasn’t granted until way after the revolution ended. So while I grant the French Revolution four stars in drama, I also judge it to be unsuccessful.

my sister called this morning. after 15 minutes of talking (i think she was trying to decide whether it was safe for her to tell me) told me that her "best friend" had asked her out the night before. and she said no to him ("because you can't go out with your best friend!"). and that her best friend had recently become her ex-best friend.

oh high school.

i need a word: what do you call someone who wants to investigate his own life, to analyse it, to make something better out of it. Someone who is a a soul searcher but not in the number crunching sort of way.
thinker?

also, why in the world would anyone use selfhelp books?

(i'm watching you've got mail. the first time i watched it was 6 or 7 years ago. It was in Parker Hall, it was the himalayan monsoon outside, and cold inside. i slept through it.)

I couldn't stand Hyde Park (and in particular my apartment) any more. I think the dishes that have been in the sink for about 11 days now sort of go to me. I spent the weekend at Naperville, ate awesome food, wateched Lebanon getting bombed :) and read almost twice as much as I normally do. Now I'm only somewhat behind the reading in Civ. Exam and paper due in 7.5 days.
Also, the Ayn-Rnd-is-absolutely-correct-in-everything phase has finished. I sat down and read through sections of Atlas Shrugged over and over again this weekend. While I agree with a lot of what she has to say, I'm starting to question some of her arguments. That, I suppose, is a good thing.
I'm planning on going to the MSI, Art Institute, Botanical Gardens, the Planitarium, and the Magnificient Mile over the next four weeks. With my map of Chicago, looking like a tourist.
Life can be awesome.
